Abstract

This article analyzes the cultural, social, and economic impacts of the production of the opera La Bohème, by Giacomo Puccini, presented in September 2025 at Teatro Glauce Rocha, in Campo Grande (MS), Brazil. The study is based on the hypothesis that large-scale cultural events can function as mechanisms of territorial development by mobilizing cultural resources, stimulating the creative economy, and expanding public access to artistic experiences of high aesthetic complexity. Methodologically, the research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of data obtained through a questionnaire administered to the audience (n = 89) with qualitative analysis of participants’ perceptions regarding the cultural and social impacts of the event. The results indicate a high level of perceived expansion of cultural repertoire, appreciation of local culture, and strengthening of the sense of territorial belonging, in addition to recognition of the tourism and economic potential associated with operatic productions in the city. The findings are aligned with international literature on cultural economics and creative industries, which recognizes cultural consumption as a driver of social well-being and territorial dynamization. As a theoretical contribution, the study proposes an analytical model that interprets operatic production as a multidimensional mechanism of territorial development, articulating cultural capital, social capital, and perceived economic externalities. It was identified that territorially embedded operatic productions can strengthen local cultural ecosystems and contribute to cultural development strategies in medium-sized Brazilian cities.
